FlowGlow Technology: How an E27 Lamp Generates 42 Light Effects in Real Time

FlowGlow is an effect lamp with an E27 socket that displays over 40 animated light effects — including realistic fire, water waves, and aurora — at a refresh rate above 120 Hz directly on its surface. Every effect is computed procedurally in real time and never repeats exactly.

What FlowGlow is

FlowGlow is an LED lamp with a standard E27 socket that fits any commercially available fixture — floor lamp, table lamp, ceiling fixture, lamp base. Inside, a microcontroller drives dozens of individually addressable LEDs at a refresh rate above 120 Hz. The result: fluid, organic animations on the lamp surface — rising fire, flowing aurora, drifting fireflies.

The effects are not played back as prerecorded loops but computed procedurally in real time. Flame motion follows simulated physics (heat distribution, particle rise), aurora bands emerge from wave-based algorithms, collision effects respond to simulated gravity. That means every flame flickers differently and every wave breaks differently. The animations never repeat exactly.

What FlowGlow is not

The product category "effect lamp" is still young. Clear distinctions help place it:

Not a projector. FlowGlow doesn't project patterns onto walls or ceilings. The effects are displayed on the lamp surface itself. FlowGlow therefore works at any room brightness and doesn't need a dark room. If you want a starry sky on the ceiling, you need a projector.

Not a replacement for primary lighting. FlowGlow is mood lighting. At 800 lumens it can illuminate a room, but its strength lies in atmospheric impact, not general lighting.

Not a smart lamp in the classic sense. A Philips Hue or Govee bulb changes the color of the whole lamp simultaneously. FlowGlow drives each LED individually, creating spatial animations on the surface. The control options (app, Alexa, timers) are comparable; the underlying principle is different.

Not a medical device. FlowGlow is not a light therapy device (no 10,000 lux). The timer and scheduling features enable wake-up-light setups, but FlowGlow does not replace a dedicated light therapy device. It can support a calm evening atmosphere but makes no health claims.

Not a baby nightlight. FlowGlow is an E27 lamp with full RGB spectrum, not a portable toddler nightlight. It works well as a children's-room mood light for older kids.

How the light effects work

What does "above 120 Hz" mean?

120 Hz means the LEDs update at least 120 times per second. For comparison: a cinema film runs at 24 Hz, a smartphone display at 60–120 Hz.

For light animations, a high refresh rate is critical because the human eye perceives flicker and stutter in light especially sensitively — more so than on a screen. Below 30 Hz, effects visibly stutter. From 60 Hz they become fluid. Above 120 Hz, light motion feels natural and continuous — temporal aliasing (the visible "stair-steps" at low refresh rates) is eliminated.

What does "procedural" mean?

Procedural effects aren't played back as prerecorded animations — they're computed live. Instead of a loop that repeats every 30 seconds, FlowGlow simulates physical processes in real time. You can watch for an hour without spotting a repeat.

What this means in practice: Fire follows heat laws — flames rise, sparks respond to simulated gravity, embers behave like embers. That's why each flame flickers differently instead of running in a detectable loop. Water follows flow patterns — waves spread, overlap, and decay like real waves. Particles follow gravity — snowflakes fall at varying speeds, meteors accelerate, collisions produce shockwaves.

The result is immediately visible: the animations feel organic and alive, not digital and repetitive.

16-bit brightness resolution

FlowGlow resolves brightness at 16 bits — that's 65,536 steps instead of the 256 steps (8 bit) conventional LED lamps offer. The difference is especially visible in two situations:

During effect transitions: Fine brightness differences within an animation — such as the glow of a fire or the soft fade of an aurora wave — stay stepless and smooth even at low brightness. With 8-bit lamps, visible jumps appear here.

When dimming: The lamp can be dimmed extremely far without the effects suffering. A Candlelight effect at 5% brightness still shows its full flicker pattern — with conventional lamps, the animation falls apart in this range because there aren't enough brightness levels left.

Speed without quality loss

Every effect can be steplessly adjusted in speed — from barely perceptible slow motion to energetic fast sequences. Because the effects are computed in real time, quality stays identical at any speed: an extremely slow aurora moves just as smoothly as a fast one.

With conventional effect lamps that play prerecorded animations, slowing down causes stutter — the in-between frames simply don't exist. FlowGlow doesn't have this problem.

Color and gradients

Every effect can be combined with any color and gradient. The full RGB spectrum is available — from warm amber through turquoise to neon pink. A fireplace in blue tones, an aurora in warm reds, snowflakes in gold: the physics of the animation stays intact, only the color interpretation changes.

Flicker-free on camera

The LEDs run at a PWM frequency above 27 kHz — well above the threshold at which cameras capture flicker. Video and photo recordings show the effects without banding or flicker. For content creators, hospitality operators, and anyone sharing their mood lighting on Instagram or TikTok, that's a relevant difference from cheaper LED products that visibly flicker on camera.

Controls

FlowGlow can be controlled four ways — each works independently of the others.

IR Remote (included)

Compact remote for the key functions: effect selection, color change, speed, brightness, on/off. Intentionally designed for simple, comfortable operation. Ready to use the moment the lamp screws in — the most direct path to control. For many users, that's enough for everyday use.

FlowGlow Studio App (iOS / Android)

Connects via Bluetooth (local) or WiFi (for remote access and timers). The app offers full access to all features:

  • Effect selection and configuration (color, speed, brightness, gradients)
  • Custom effect designer to create your own
  • Community to share and discover effects from other users
  • Timers and schedules: automatic on/off, effect, color, and speed changes by time of day

No account required for core functions. The app can be used without registration. An optional account unlocks timers, schedules, and remote control from outside the home network.

Amazon Alexa

Voice control for on/off and basic scenes. "Alexa, turn on FlowGlow" or "Alexa, set FlowGlow to fireplace."

Timers and schedules (via the app)

Automatic effect and color changes at set times. Requires a (free) account. Typical setups: morning wake-up light, automatic evening transition to Candlelight, night shutoff.

Possible setups

Wake-up light

Schedule at 6:30 a.m., "Steady" effect in warm orange, brightness rises over 30 minutes from 5% to 80%. No dedicated wake-up light needed — an existing bedside lamp with FlowGlow is enough.

Fireplace atmosphere

Calm Fire in warm amber, speed at 15–20%, brightness at 40–60%. In a floor lamp next to the sofa or on a lamp base on the sideboard. For evenings when a fireplace is missing.

Aurora as evening light

Aurora effect in green-violet, speed at 10–15%. Especially effective combined with otherwise dimmed room lighting.

Party mode

Equalizer effect with sound reactivity enabled — the built-in sound sensor responds to room music. Alternatively: Fireworks or Space Invaders for visual spectacle.

Sleep companion

Aurora in deep red, speed at minimum, brightness at 10–15%. Timer at 45 minutes with fade-out.
