How do Wi-Fi smart bulbs work?
Wi-Fi bulbs connect directly to the home network, so they do not require a manufacturer-specific radio bridge. This can be simple for a few lamps: install the bulb, connect it in the manufacturer app, and assign a room.
Local control and cloud dependence vary by product. Matter over Wi-Fi can provide local basic commands through a compatible Matter controller, while many conventional Wi-Fi systems use manufacturer cloud services for remote access and voice assistants.
What is Bluetooth useful for?
Bluetooth can connect a phone directly to a lamp without a router, internet connection, or account. It works well for one nearby light, setup, and local control. Range, remote access, and automations are more limited unless another network or controller is added.
Why do larger lighting systems use Zigbee?
Zigbee lights connect through a bridge or compatible hub. Mains-powered devices can extend the mesh, allowing signals to travel through the lighting network instead of placing every bulb directly on Wi-Fi.
A good bridge can manage rooms, accessories, and local automations. Shared radio technology does not guarantee that every feature works across brands, so compatibility still needs to be checked.
What is Matter in a smart home?
Matter is an application protocol that lets supported devices work across compatible smart-home platforms. It runs over IP networks such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread; Bluetooth Low Energy helps with setup. Matter is not another radio beside Wi-Fi and Thread.
A Matter controller is still required. Thread devices also need a Thread Border Router. Existing Zigbee lights may appear in Matter platforms through a compatible bridge. Matter improves shared basic control, but proprietary effects and advanced features may remain in the manufacturer app.

Do smart bulbs need a hub?
One to four bulbs used mainly for app or voice control often work without a manufacturer bridge. A dedicated hub becomes more valuable when many lights, physical switches, sensors, and local automations need to work predictably across rooms.
“No hub” rarely means no central component at all. The router, Matter controller, smart speaker, or Thread Border Router may still provide coordination.
Which smart lighting functions matter most?
Dimming and tunable white: adapt one fixture to practical and evening use.
Groups and scenes: store the state of several lights as one command.

Which system fits which scale?
